Unintended Consequences

You know that War on Women in the Excited States that Rethugs insist is bogus?

Well, it may be having a bit of a boomerang effect.

It's turning people pro-choice. (Emphasis mine.)
Roughly half of the nation’s voters remain pro-choice when it comes to abortion, and the number of voters who view the procedure as morally wrong in most situations is below 50% for the first time.

Overall, 51% of Likely U.S. Voters consider themselves pro-choice when it comes to abortion, according to the latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. Forty percent (40%) say they are pro-life, while another 10% are undecided.
Since Canada is already decisively pro-choice, maybe Woodworth's Wank will have similar unintended consequences.

Bwhahahahaha.

Presuming it remains nothing more than a wank aimed at appeasing Harper's hardest of the hard right, I was wondering myself whether this might not be a nice outcome.
I'm old enough to remember the whole abortion battle the first (and second and third) time around; from what I see, this is actually reminding younger women (and men) on a really personal level that you can't take your rights for granted.
Two of us have kids who've written to their MPs for the first time, demanding -- demanding! -- action.
And they watched the Alberta election returns until they were all in.
I think it's also been another crystal-clear look at who Harper really is, and how he operates. Not a bad thing either.
Presuming it remains nothing more than a wank...

Hi, Chris. That's great news about the kids.

Do they know about the online petition? There's a place for comments on it. I'd love to see a bunch of 'I'm 25 and never dreamed I'd have to fight this stupid fight that my parents already won. But I will.'

Eternal vigilance and all that.

The Alberta Wildrose experiment, heavily but unofficially backed by the Harper regime, failed. I wonder if the back room strategists are going to tread lightly with this wanker's motion. Had the Wildrose party won, I think these social retrogrades would have felt confident, if not emboldened by the thought that a thoroughly hard right party, vocally anti-choice and anti-gay and anti-PoC, had actually won.

I am totally that 25 year old. And I have to say, I am slightly disheartened that I have to fight this battle. But, since I do it with such vigor it is kind of nice to show those politicians exactly what I am made of. :P

'emboldened' There's a good Yankee psyops term.I rather wonder if Wild Rose - suitably puffed up to threat level by push polls - did not work at driving perception of the Cons as centrist ; rather like the federal P.C.s used to do for the Lie-berals.

of course most people are pro-choice
its funny though...the pro-life crowd keeps going on and on about how fern hill et al are a 'mere minority' and how the 'majority of people' would love to see all abortions re-criminalized
