OMFG! There were inflatable beavers???11!1???

Apparently so.

I had the telly on but left the room after the embarrassment of the rekindling of the flame. (Have I ever mentioned how much I loathe mimes?)

When I heard 'O Canada' for what seemed like the fifteenth time, I came back and turned it off.

And missed the inflatable beavers.

Thank the goddess for small mercies.

I thought the closing ceremonies were fun from beginning to end.
Just my little humble opinion.
THe only minus (again) is that people think they can take liberties whilst playing our anthem--though the closing ceremonies nat. anthem was sumg just a little better than the opening one...
The russians showed us up there by actually singing theirs properly.
MJF got a standing o--that was wonderful...
and, as others have pointed out--Canadians are very good at laughing at and with themselves--I loved it...

I left a comment like this at Unrepentant Old Hippie's site:

I think one of the air-thingies was Senilitor Mike Duffy.

The beavers (and moose and canoes and mounties and showgirls in mapleleafs) was Michael Buble's Vegas act set ala Ziegfeld Follies meets '40s Hollywood and meant to be over the top trope cheeze sung to the tune of jazz snap "Maple Leaf Forever".

I could have stood it seguing/ending with a reveal of a big multicultural chorus of the real Canada carrying on the mapleleafforever refrain waving goodbye to everyone leaving the games, but they stuck with the big kitschy 'mwah'. And it were very self-aware kitsch.

The rekindling part was 150% the right thing to do... absolutely perfect.

When a mime falls in the forest, you can hear the clowns cheering.

Niles: Oh. So it was supposed to be bad? It certainly succeeded then.

Vegas, Cirque du Soleil, all that stuff that's supposed to make people go 'Wow' just makes me want to leave the room.

deBeauxOs: Bad. :D

Oh my gosh! I had quite a different response. I just thought it was all done tongue-in-cheek, showed that we have a great sense of humour, & was a lot of fun! And I LOVED the blow-up beavers! ;-) I agree with Merboy about the rekindling mime - perfect. It was as if a great gay Canadian Queen got to do what s/he wanted to put on a Big Showwww! Fun, over-the-top, a little tacky, but warm & happy too. Loooved that everybody in the crowd got their own moose antler - i want some! ;-)
Cheers everybody.
p.s. The part I didn't like - Harper sitting there like a lump, looking miserable. (Why did we have to see him at all?) Oh, and ALL the long anthems of a bunch of other countries.

Shit, I must have erased my own comment earlier.
McClatchy's has a great Canadian inflatable beaver shot here while over here they refer to them as "badgers"

Badgers! LOL. Thanks for that, Alison.

LOL LOL LOL!

Even if it was poking fun at ourselves, it came across as very self-indulgent and Air Farce-ish. Kind of like the in-crowd making a joke that nobody else gets.
