Is Don Cherry a Puke?

Contemptible. Arrogant. Coward. Ignorant. Opportunist.

On October 6 Cherry launched into one of his classic semi-coherent rants.
From here:
His targets on Thursday were three former hockey enforcers he decried as “pukes” [...]

Cherry has since apologized for saying “pukes” because of kids watching the show. [my emphasis] He was referring to Jim Thomson, Chris Nilan (featured in the new documentary, The Last Gladiators) and Stu Grimson, who recently spoke out about the tragic deaths of Wade Belak, Derek Boogaard and Rick Rypien – enforcers themselves – linking their various, fatal addictions to the game.

Cherry’s beef? These players are “hypocrites” and “turncoats,” who made careers of being fighters and who are now using these deaths as platforms to discourage players from “mak[ing] the same living [they] did.”

His comments have aroused anger and outright hatred among viewers sickened by his “verbal bullying” (this was posted on the CBC site); others dismiss him as a “boorish” proponent of the violence believed to be killing the sport.
It should be mentioned that lawyers for Thomson, Nilan and Grimson did send Cherry a sternly worded letter about his invectives.

The Royal Military College at Kingston recently offered Cherry an honorary degree which he declined.

It's unlikely Cherry's enthusiasm for future Support Our Troops photo opportunities will be extended to the veterans who sacrificed their health in the course of their military service.

He doesn't seem to have a drop of concern for anything except ensuring the longevity of his lucrative franchise at Coach's Corner.

Is Don Cherry Pro-War?

Yup.

From 2003, CBC deletes clip of Cherry and MacLean arguing about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Afterwards, Cherry spoke on a radio show:
"You have to realize the CBC is government owned," Cherry said on the program, which is broadcast throughout the United States and Canada. "You have to say the government was against it (the war) and I'm for it and I'm on a government program. I really thought this could be the end."

h/t Art Bodger at Hockey Fans for Peace page. Different from group. Confusing.

So, to all those defenders of Sour Grapes saying he 'just' supports the troops -- you are wrong.

Don Cherry is pro-war.

ADDED: Fake Don Cherry weighs in.

MORE: Twatsy weighs in to say that members of the group are actual Communists. Now how does he know that? Would that be defamation, do you think?

Taliban Hates Hockey and Cats

I just turned on computer -- not enough coffee yet -- and approved two new comments.

From the Hockey Fans for Peace post:
nkaulius said...

Im so angry by this. A hundred of my fellow citizens died in 9/11 because of terrorists. I fully support the war against this terrible crime. These bleeding hearts should be ashamed of them selves. Who else in Canada supports these brave men and women as much as don? What a Joke. He's a GREAT Canadian and you should all show the man the respect he deserves.

From the Feral Cats post:
croghan27 said...

"Kill the cats.

But the obsessed cat people -- almost all women -- go bananas. Beeeg trouble at the civic level."

crogh is a cat person and if someone undertakes some .... ultra legal actions against cats near him he will respond with a similar ultra legal reaction.

Now my under-caffeinated brain is trying to figure out how to combine the irrationality of the pro-DonCherry camp with that of the pro-cat camp and get them to support the troops by replacing them in Afghanistan.

Maybe spread the word that the Taliban has kidnapped Don Cherry and is torturing cats?

Hockey Fans for Peace

And for getting Sour Grapes to STFU.
A newly formed Vancouver-based group is challenging Don Cherry to a debate on Coach’s Corner to offset criticism that the fiery commentator is using Hockey Night in Canada to promote militarism and the war in Afghanistan.

Hockey Fans for Peace plans to rally outside the HNIC broadcast of Saturday night’s Vancouver Canucks game against the Detroit Red Wings at Rogers Arena in Vancouver to make the point that hockey fans have the democratic right to speak out against the war in Afghanistan.

Spokesman Kimball Cariou said Wednesday the group is calling on the CBC “to either stop the promotion of militarism during hockey broadcasts, or else to allow one of its members to debate Cherry during an upcoming Coach’s Corner.”

Hockey fan and peace activist Derrick O’Keefe agrees.

“It’s something that’s bothered me for a lot of years that Don Cherry’s Coach’s Corner has been used to really give a one-sided platform to talk about the war only in full support,” said O’Keefe, a member of the group’s Facebook page. “And when Don Cherry makes political comments during the hockey broadcast he’s never challenged.”

Of course, there's a Facebook group.

I just joined.

$150K Squirt/Photo Op

Around the blogosphere and twitosphere, JimBobby has been wondering what that ejaculation missile firing by Sour Grapes cost us.

The answer is supplied by Robert McClelland in the comments here.

From the CBC a couple of years ago:
Canadian army gunners in Afghanistan are now cleared to fire new GPS-guided artillery shells at Taliban militants at a cost of $150,000 a round.

Then, there's what lindsaymstewart said on the matter:
Don Cherry is now an unlawful combatant worthy of the same fair treatment afforded Omar Khadr.

Peter 'Airshow' McKay should be fired. Sour Grapes should be IGNORED.

Amateur Show

Sweet Babee Jay-Zeus!

It would appear that Afghanistan has officially become the 21st century's version of an African safari, providing a golden photo opportunity for hackneyed politicians and melagomanic circus performers to compensate for their shortcomings when required to get it up without the assistance of pharmaceuticals.

Don Cherry should go back to *only* shooting off his big fat ignorant mouth. Less likelihood of carnage and collateral damage.

Comrades: Unite the Pink!

Spacing's Leftwing Pinko buttons and magnets are now available online.

There was poll on three different designs, none of which included a bicycle.

After several commenters pointed out that Cherry had dissed not just leftwing pinkos and kooks but bike-riders, another design was offered.

Since I've never used PayPal and now am waiting to hear from Visa WTF they think they're up to (post to come), I think I'll mosey over to one of these retail outlets on Thursday.
• Swipe Books (401 Richmond St. W., 1st floor)
• Outer Layer (577 Queen St W.)
• Outer Layer (480 Bloor St W.)
• Wise Daughters (3079b Dundas St W.)

To non-Torontonians who don't want to buy online: there's a cheque option too.

Full disclosure: I have absolutely nothing to do with Spacing.

Wikileaks is vital.

In a world where this kind of bald-faced lying and covering-up has become the standard modus operandi, where our own public broadcaster is subverted by the odious antics of millionaire spouting his vile rightwing spleen, Wikileaks is vital.

Fatwa Flanagan continues to perform his stupid aw-shucks schtick.

As Buckdog said:

If Mr. Flanagan joked about a bomb in his shorts at the Edmonton Airport, should we expect the security guards to merely laugh and slap good old Tom Flanagan on the back for being such a funny joker?

Fatwa Flanagan and other members of the Old Con Boys Club keep behaving like this because their sense of entitlement ensures they can get away with hoodwinking the public.

Until Wikileaks pulls back the curtain and the whole world can see the 'bomb' Fatwa Flanagan's concealing is a smelly old dud that a mega-dose of Viagra couldn't revive.

Here's one blowhard who's really funny and who gets what's comin' to him.

Bonus: Go read Alison at Creekside. Now.

Extra bonus added by fh: Go sign another fun Avaaz petition. Because it gets up the rightwingnutz's noses. Organizers are aiming for one million signatures this week.
