Research published online in the journal Intelligence on Thursday claims the IQ of people in Western nations has fallen by an average of 14.1 points over the past century.

Why would that be?

Conservative politics?

Chemical pollution?

Shitty education system?

Nope.

Brainy ladies.

Previous research has found that women of higher intelligence are having fewer children, meaning women of lower intelligence are driving population growth, according to the study.

Over time, experts say, that would affect the average IQ of a population.

Doncha love it when the anti-choicers crow that they will out-breed the sane people?

Well, this is the comeuppance: stupidity.

Ontario Conservative leader Tim Hudak is following in the path of his federal counterpart Stephen Harper and staying out of the abortion debate.

Last week, the Association for Reformed Political Action, a national non-profit Christian organization, posted text from a 2009 email written by a Hudak leadership campaign staffer that stated, "(Hudak) is pro-life and has signed petitions calling for abortion defunding and conscience legislation."

Hudak, later questioned by reporters at a press conference at Queen's Park, said he "may have" signed petitions in his riding calling to end abortion funding in the past, but would follow Harper's lead and leave the issue alone if elected Oct. 6.

An old ARPA article from 2009 has been getting a lot of attention in Ontario over the past few days in light of comments about Tim Hudak and whether he is pro-life. In light of that, we checked back through our old emails from two years ago to verify what was written. The content was correct, but it should have clarifified that the email came from Hudak's campaign team at that time, not Hudak himself.

When a Blogging Tory Uses a Photo Like This . . .

Here's one of them opining on the long-gun registry. First he (probably) outlines how everybody in Canada -- except the Frenchies and who gives a shit about them? -- is on side with scrapping the registry because everybody knows that those darned criminals just won't register their deer rifles. Then, with breathtaking (well, for a BT) clarity, he (surely) goes on:

Really Vic? How 'bout letting me and other Canadians decide what we "need", pal?

Because, while I'm no genius, I'm thinking if the report comes out later and is positive, it will give the hapless Michael Ignatieff yet another weapon to use to suggest the Conservatives are secretive and not to be trusted.

Gee, ya think?

But how the heck can the report be 'positive' if the gun registry is such a blight on our liberties?

The blogger says that they'll just explain that the report isn't really positive and then everyone can continue blithely ignoring all the facty-sciency-experty stuff they don't like.

Bizarre Metaphors: Afghanistan as "special needs baby".

This metaphor is almost as idiotic as the one exploited by Blob Blogging Wingnut when SHE was attempting to defend Bill C-484, now defunct. At that time, SHE compared a pregnant woman to a bird-cage containing a parrot; a colleague in religious zealotry used the allegory of a giant-screen television damaged while being stolen.

Thomas Friedman may be a thrice-awarded Pulitzer prize winner, but his lame attempt to achieve a memorable sound bite may be remembered for different reasons.

... we're talking about America in the middle of the great recession. I feel like we're like an unemployed couple who just went out and decided to adopt a special needs baby. You know, I mean, that's really kind of what we're doing. And that's like, whoa, y'know, that terrifies me.

Some have argued that the parents of that "special needs baby" don't want the US to adopt it.

O Solo Mama may also have some witheringly appropriate observations to make about the perpetuation of more inaccuracies and stereotypes about the adoption process.

Where are the feminists?

I started off pissed off, but now I'm sitting here giggling.

JJ the Unrepentant has a blogpost about an evil Iraqi woman. In it, she links to these chuckleheads, with the quote 'Where are the feminists?' I thought she was kidding until I clicked the link.

Indeed, we feminists are somehow to blame for Islam's treatment of women. Or for not speaking up about Islam's treatment of women. Or something.

Curious about other issues on which we feminists were AWOL, I googled 'Where are the feminists?' and got my answer.

Everything.
