Fuck PETA: why feminists are critical.

Another day, another *protest*, another dollar for PETA.

When mercenary mansplainers and faux-progressives grouse about being deprived of their eye candy entitlements - it's the 1970s all over again! Shulamith Firestone nailed it when she said: "Radical men may advocate certain freedoms for women when they overlap their own interest..."  When Firestone 'went too far' in denouncing the specific forms of sexual oppression that her male comrades enjoyed as privileges for their own benefit, she was maligned for her scathing honesty.

There is much valid criticism of PETA's spurious monopoly and its claim that it is an *ethical* champion for animal rights.

Here's why many feminist thinkers - vegetarians and vegans, rescuers of abused and abandoned animals, supporters and donors to genuine animal wellbeing organizations, do NOT endorse PETA's tactical shenanigans.
[...]PETA has more or less dropped their initial pretense that they're simply cashing in on the sex appeal of attractive spokesmodels to draw attention to the cause of animal rights. The old "I'd rather be naked than wear fur" campaigns that I remember from my childhood were cute and harmless.

PETA has since graduated to ads and PR stunts depicting women as corpses, or animal carcasses with the names of cuts of meat written on their bodies as if they're waiting to be butchered. In one charming and frequently recycled campaign, PETA recruited naked pregnant women to pose as pigs in cages.

Using sex appeal to sell social justice is as old as social justice movements, and not something to get upset about, per se. PETA has gotten into the business of selling degradation.
From here.
I’m a supporter of animal rights who eats a mostly vegetarian diet (I occasionally eat fish). I support organizations like the Humane Society and the SPCA, and I would support PETA if they didn’t make a habit of lying, misrepresenting scientific data, and using images of dehumanized scantily clad and nude women to get money and attention[...]

The same was true for objectification. Both sexual ads and non-sexual ads objectified the women in them, but the sexual ads dehumanized the women in a way that resulted in decreased support. Objectified women were also judged as lacking credibility, but that alone didn’t account for a drop in support – only dehumanization did that.

The other interesting characteristic of this paper is that it is the first to show a link between the dehumanization of women and unethical behavior unrelated to gender and sex. Many feminists have made this point in the past, so it’s interesting to see a study that supports the assertion. I hope we see more research in the area, despite the fact that it will probably do little to convince the people at PETA or the men who constantly argue that the continued objectification of women is no cause for concern.
From here

The purpose of PETA's odious misogynist publicity tactics is to provide a steady influx of funds for the organization.

Consider this.  What if the bodies thus exposed and marked up with butcher's markings were those of men resembling Mike Duffy and Rob Ford - in all their gluttonous, bloated, boozy, purple-veined raddled girth?

Now that would surely repel the RibFest customers and put them off eating meat, at least in proximity to such protest.

Disgusting?  Yes.

Degrading?  Yes.

De-humanizing?  Yes.

But unlike the ongoing use of comely, attractive female interns and volunteers as tasty tidbits, exploiting such men would not be conducive to raising more millions$$$ for PETA's well-larded coffers.

One last word

Match Made in Attention-Whore Heaven

OctoMom and PETA.

No. Really.
Nadya Suleman, the US woman who became known as 'octomom' after giving birth to octuplets, is supporting a birth control campaign for animals.

Her lawyer said Ms Suleman, who is fighting to keep her house from foreclosure, agreed to allow People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals to put a sign in her front yard proclaiming, Don't Let Your Dog or Cat Become an Octomom. Always Spay or Neuter.

Peta said it offered Ms Suleman 5,000 US dollars and a month's supply of veggie burgers and hot dogs in exchange for placing the sign in front of her house in La Habra, California.

She's trying to ward off foreclosure on her $450,000 house.

And PETA is just being PETA.

Past DJ! thoughts on OctoMom here.

Tofu Pie - It's the New Anthrax.

Or so believes MP Gerry Byrne.

Right about now I'll bet that Iggy is unabashedly (though secretly) envious of Stevie Spiteful's ability to muzzle most of his caucus (except for the usual lunatics like Maurice Vellacott).

An MP from Newfoundland and Labrador says Monday's incident in which the federal fisheries minister was hit in the face with a pie should prompt Ottawa to look into whether PETA, an international animal-rights group, should be labelled a terrorist organization.

"There has to be a review whether or not PETA has crossed the line now by attacking a federal minister of the Crown for the purpose of public intimidation of an office holder," Byrne told CBC News.

Meanwhile, Fisheries and Oceans Minister Gail Shea, having survived this assault perpetrated with soya curd, is making the most of the situation.
[...] she is not daunted by getting a pie in the face. "If this is what it takes to stand up for Canadian sealing families and this industry I'm certainly very proud to do it." Shea said she believes the attack on the seal hunt is just the beginning, and other industries will become targets.
Other industries will become targets? That sounds ominous. Let's see ... it can't be the medical isotopes-producing industry, the ReformaTories let that one die an ignominous death. The SUV manufacturing industry? Gone, too. Are there any industries left in Canada to attack?

Say, would the last industry to leave Canada please remember to close the light? Ta.

Pet-Pee

This was predictable. The convergence of the arrogantly sexist authoritarian marketing campaign with soft-pedaling, dissembling authoritarian believers.

Support for reproductive choice by women who are grandmothers, mothers, adolescent girls, women from all ethnic and religious backgrounds becomes
this:

Women are told by old-school feminists and, too often, their own family members, that killing their unborn child is a valid “choice.”
Now there's text-book spin, aka disinformation, written with the intent to distort facts and reality to suit an ideological imperative. The PWPL crew is rabidly anti-abortion. No one is forcing any of them to have an abortion. Yet they would deprive all other women of the choice to carry or not carry a pregnancy to term.

But you know what? In spite of their high-and-mighty judgmental position with regard to other women's life choices, DAMMIT JANET! generously offers them a graphic for their t-shirts, in the same spirit of sisterhood that PWPL demonstrates.

Men In Fur

Not to be confused with Mein Fuhrer moments ....
Archbishop Rino Fisichella, president of the Pontifical Academy for Life at the Vatican, described President Barack Obama’s signing of an executive order allowing U.S. tax dollars to fund pro-abortion organizations beyond the shores of the United States saying it is "the arrogance of someone who believes they are right, in signing a decree which will open the door to abortion and thus to the destruction of human life," as quoted by Italian daily Corriere della Sera on January 24.
The outspoken prelate, who also once denounced what he termed as “racism” on the part of instructors at the Academy, added "What is important is to know how to listen... without locking oneself into ideological visions with the arrogance of a person who, having the power, thinks they can decide on life and death."
Irony is alive and thriving, thanks to the overwhelming duplicity of Roman Catholic dogma-spewing clergy.

Is it evul for this feminazi to wish for PETA to target the Vatican because of all the defenseless ermines who have been needlessly slaughtered for the aggrandizement of the high clergy, including Pope Benny the Rat?

Un grand merci to Let Freedom Rain and Canadian Cynic.

Fan the flame of desire ... only for carnivores. Pity.

Every once in a while a product comes along that elicits WTF?!?!? as the first response.

Then upon second thought it makes sense, in the way Casablanca was immortalized by dialogue such as "... it doesn't take much to see that the problems of three little people don't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world."

Only in this crazy world, Burger King, the ...

mass purveyor of grilled meat is offering, for a limited time, something even better than their usual piles of beef patties [to] men ... the chance to smell like their favourite meat snack with the launch of Flame ...

The company describes Flame as "the scent of seduction with a hint of flame-broiled meat".

Flame is not for vegetarians. Sorry. You guys will have to mob Le Commensal to demand the creation of a cologne with a distinctive aroma - roasted garlic hummus no doubt.

One does wonder how PETA will react to this outrage.

Me, I worry about whichever demographic that happens to be the focus of BK's marketing. Will this will lead to more gender confusion, the bane of Blob Blogging Wingnut's existence?

Who will wear the Flame in the family? Women, to keep the romance in their marriage fresh tasty and ... errr, subliminal? Men, to signal that they are the hunters who bring home the bacon, cheese and delicious seasoning?

It sure gives a new meaning to the expression "hunka-hunka burning love", doesn't it?
