Merkins Are Nuts and/or Pig-Ignorant

From a preview of a poll to be released tomorrow (today?) in more detail:
67 percent of Republicans (and 40 percent of Americans overall) believe that Obama is a socialist.

The belief that Obama is a “domestic enemy” is widely held—a sign of trouble yet to come.

57 percent of Republicans (32 percent overall) believe that Obama is a Muslim.

45 percent of Republicans (25 percent overall) agree with the Birthers in their belief that Obama was "not born in the United States and so is not eligible to be president".

38 percent of Republicans (20 percent overall) say that Obama is "doing many of the things that Hitler did".

Scariest of all, 24 percent of Republicans (14 percent overall) say that Obama "may be the Antichrist."

While the progressive blogs, like this one, understandably focus on the ReThuglican numbers, have a look again at the overall numbers.

40% of Americans believe Obama is a socialist!

32% think he's Muslim!!!

25% are Birthers!!!!!!!

14% say he may be the Antichrist!!!!!!!!!!!!

I got nuthin'.

Some opine that 9/11 sent a large segment of the American public into a mass psychosis from which they have never emerged. These people live in an alternate reality, an artificial state that mirrors their artificial economy. We've seen this sort of thing before. Think Europe, think 1930's.

Ooooh, 1930s. That did not end well, did it?

No, not especially.

Interesting, the average of the last four numbers is just under 28%, roughly the number that stuck with Dubya to the bitter end.

Sightly OT but also amusing, the author of the Daily beast/Yahoo piece is (drumroll please):

John Avlon's new book Wingnuts: How the Lunatic Fringe is Hijacking America is available now by Beast Books both on the Web and in paperback. He is also the author of Independent Nation: How Centrists Can Change American Politics. Previously, he served as chief speechwriter for New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and was a columnist and associate editor for The New York Sun.

Looky who's worried about wingnuts.
