As it so happens, I'm Franco-Ontarian and while I understand, intellectually and emotionally, the premise of the sovereignty movement in Québec, I didn't feel personally engaged.
This is the famous *firewall* letter King Stevie Spiteful the First and his cronies addressed to the premier of Alberta; it was published in the NatPo in January 2001.
The leader of the Contempt Party has bragged about the ways that he will oversee the destruction of Canada as we know it. Federalism? Phooey. SHithead came to Ottawa to reduce our government to something small enough to drown in a bathtub.
Twenty or perhaps even ten years from now, when the country formerly known as Canada has been fragmented into a number of US states, political historians and theorists will compare the respective goals and strategies of ethical sovereignists in Québec - people like Françoise David, Gilles Duceppe and Amir Khadir - versus greedy survivalists in Alberta such as Ezra Levant.
Moving to Montréal is quite appealing, at the moment. If I still feel this way this time next year ...

That's great that Dawg and you know Turmel so well. Most of us didn't know anything about her until she became interim leader. And the fact that she held membership in the Bloc until recently is interesting. Most people belong to zero or one federalist party, so just understanding this dual allegiance is interesting. It also gives Turmel a chance to tell us about her views on different parties, the Bloc, and why she chose to hold dual memberships. I don't see anything wrong with learning about this and letting Turmel speak. Just too bad she didn't speak better and clearer about it. I expected more as I don't really understand joining a second federal party for a friend. I thought maybe Turmel would hold dual memberships to balance more complex political views as a Quebecer.
Also it isn't just ROC. This is of interest inside Quebec and even in her local riding, there has been some discussion of her statements and trying to interpret them. Of course it is of interest as political parties are a large part of politics.
I have trouble reconciling the image of slow, moderating, change-averse conservatives with these new radical Conservatives that want to change things drastically and unrecognizably.
You'd almost think that there's a better-fitting name for their party. Like maybe Reform.
"Anonymous" #1: Did I say anything in my post about knowing Turmel?
Nothing at all, actually.
My post simply advances the notion that this media *divertissement* is a tactic to distract people and turn our gaze away from the destruction the Reform ... err, Contempt Party is inflicting.
I don't blame any province wanting to separate out from under, Harper the Christan's claws.
Some years back, the west had talked about separating from the east. We can now, kick ourselves for, not doing just that. The Territories were coming in with the west. If Quebec separated, Harper could have Ontario all to himself, and he and Ontario, can join the U.S. and damned good riddance to Harper and Ontario. Harper should rename his party to, The Fascist "Harper Government" of the U.S.A. Or perhaps Harper, could call Ontario, Canada.
This isn't our Canada anymore. Our Constitution is ignored. Our Civil Rights and Liberties, have been taken away from us. Democracy and Freedom? What in the hell is that? That was gone as soon as Herr Harper, came on the scene. He is making such a damned mess of this country. None of the other country's politicians, like Harper either. They call him a, petty gasbag. He is arrogant, stubborn and impossible to work with. Remember Copenhagen?
Harper even sent his henchmen to Guelph University, to stop the students from voting. They even tried to steal the ballot boxes. What a paranoid dictator Harper is. However, all dictators are paranoid, because everyone hates them.
I am sorry for the Maritime provinces, Ottawa has always screwed them too. Ottawa tried to cheat them of their, off shore oil wells.
