So, where are all the rightwing defenders of Muslim Canadian women now?

As stated by Canadian Cynic: Hello? Blogging Tories? *Tap*. *Tap*. Is this thing on?

Indeed. When the Kingston police charged 3 suspects who were family members of of Zainab, Geeti and Sahar Shafia and of Rona Amir Mohammed with their murders, the Blogging Tories were all over the case like white on Wonder Bread. The blogging air was blue with indignation, recriminations and outrage. Feminists / progressives stood accused of callous indifference to the death of these women.

"Honour kiiiiiiillings!!!" was howled and shrieked over and over and over again by the usual rightwing conservative reformaTory sycophants.

Now observe the MASSIVE silence over in their ranks as the facts regarding
the shameful treatment Suaad Hagi Mohamud received from Canadian officials at the embassy are published and broadcast - information that progressive bloggers and media have been saying for weeks now.

The difference?

Suaad Hagi Mohamud is still very much alive. When she gets home, she will give her son three months worth of hugs.

Oh. And among those who demonstrated the most callous bureaucratic and racist indifference to her plight are Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon, Public Safety Minister Peter Van Loan and Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney - all non-muslim white men of privilege and members of Stephen Harper's Conservative Government.

UPDATE: Hostile staff at the Canadian consulate are not apologizing & they are being surly and unhelpful, as observed by Dr Dawg.

Check out Broadsides, for Antonia's take on the double-speak/double-standard of the HarperCons.

I'm very glad you blogged on this important and scary story, deBeauxOs.

I was revolted by many of the comments on the Star story. Just as with Mr Adbelrazik's case, these people continue to believed that 'there's more to the story' or 'the brown person must have done Something'.

Disgusting.

And don't get me started on our racist government. . .

Fortunately our socially progressive and pro-feminist blogging colleagues have blogged unrelentlessly about Suaad Hagi Mohamud's plight. Dr Dawg in particular, but also Alison@Creekside, Canadian Cynic and Cathie from Canada.

Yes, well, I finally figured out that it doesn't matter to them how much one might blog about a topic -- if you're not blogging from their POV ("scary muslim honour killings!!!11!") then whatever you wrote counts for SFA.

I'm glad you guys are covering this story. I'm trying to take a break from all the f-ing stupidity, it's getting me down.

Exactly. You hit the nail right on the head. What happened to Suaad Hagi Mohamud is terrible but she didn't die, she just couldn't get back to Canada. So why should people care so much, right? This is just awful.

Well, looky here. Dodo weighs in. She seems a mite suspicious, but still I believe this is the first mention by any of the Blogging Wingnut Horde.

Well, it speaks to the opportunistic way that rightwing socons and/or religious zealots will exploit the dead in order to attack those they fear and hate.

Feminists honour those murdered as a direct or indirect consequence of systemic gynophobia, racism or homophobia; we also work to ensure that their killers are brought to justice and that appropriate legal reforms are advanced in the name of equity and justice.

fern hill, it's unlikely that Dodo will recognize the inherent racism, hypocrisy and opportunism of her Blogging Rightwingnut buddies. She appears quite happy to swallow the RepubliCon party line, in spite of the evident conflict of interests and loyalties.
